Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882) was an American lawyer and politician, known for championing cause of slaves and the poor. A case of measles while at Harvard led to loss of some vision and so he chose to take a sea voyage - aboard the 86-foot brig Pilgrim, bound from Boston, around Cape Horn to California. He later specialized in maritime law and published a book about his voyage titled two Years Before the Mast. This drawing, dating to 1902, illustrates the passage in Dana's book written for September 22, 1834: "The vessel continued in her pursuit, changing her course as we changed our." The vessel chasing Dana's was a small, clipper built-brig with a black hull - seen here in the background. The location was the Atlantic Ocean just north of the equator.
