A Dramatic panoramic view Elephant Island in the South Shetland Islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. Elephant Island is a bleak and inhospitable place. The Crew of the Endurance reached Elephant Island on 15th April 1916 after the Endurance was abandoned on 27th October 1915. After 7 days on the Island, Ernest Shakelton and Captain Frank Worsley set out with 4 other men in the 22ft James Caird and headed across 1480 kilometers of ocean to South Georgia to attempt to reach a whaling station and rescue. Shackelton reached South Georgia after an epic journey. The remaining crew survived 138 days on Elephant Island living on Penguins and Seals until the 4th rescue attempt on the 30th August 1916.
